The large number of physical and biological science articles is augmented with a few entries about psychology, anthropology, agriculture, and pharmacology. The prose is serviceable, but dry. A glossary of terms is included within the longer articles. The unsigned entries are accurate and timely. Virtual reality, the Hale-Bopp comet, and the Sojourner rover are included, although protease inhibitors is not. Entries are alphabetically arranged and vary in length from several paragraphs to several pages. There is enough material to use for short reports or as a starting point for further research. Browsers may enjoy these volumes, but the article titles are not sharply differentiated from the section headings. The black-and-white photographs and other illustrations are utilitarian, rarely attractive, and occasionally murky.
